Saya Guadarrama

My project: High-Performance Magnesium-Based Thermoelectric Modules for Solid-State Cooling

The objectives: Develop, fabricate, and validate high-performance magnesium-based thermoelectric modules by integrating optimised materials, reliable interfaces, and device-level modelling.

Background: Saya has a bachelor in Physics and a master in physical chemistry from the University of Bordeaux, France. She likes the idea of connecting with people around one project, despite different cultures and generations, and likes to challenge herself and go beyond her limits (both in terms of knowledge and physically).

Lab motto: It’s not only lab motto but just her motto in life, it’s a quote from John Wooden, “Succes is peace of mind on knowing you did your best”

Mariana Pineda

Project: Microstructure, Defect, and Interface Engineering of Magnesium-Based Thermoelectric Materials

Background: Mariana comes from a strong nanotechnology and materials science background, holding both a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Nanotechnology, with hands-on expertise in wet-chemistry synthesis and the characterization of materials and devices. She has worked with hybrid thermoelectric materials and devices, organic photovoltaic cells, and catalysts.

Motivation: Developing effective, impactful sustainability solutions such as solid-state cooling devices requires a deep understanding of the materials they rely on. Mariana is therefore excited to contribute to the advancement of thermoelectric materials through fundamental materials science. Establishing structure-property relationships is particularly crucial for magnesium-based thermoelectric devices, whose performance and stability are influenced by microstructure, secondary phases, defects, and grain boundaries.

Focus: Advanced characterization of magnesium-based thermoelectric materials to establish structure-property relationships related to performance and stability.

Motto: We'll figure it out

Sara El Akel

Sara Al Akel

III-V Lab,France

DC 13 Project

Project: Thermal optimization of photonic devices with integration of thermoelectric coolers (MSCA Doctoral Network MGICIAN)

Background: Sara comes from a background in nanotechnologies and is fascinated by photonic design and advanced process development. She is particularly interested in developing sustainable approaches to photonic technologies.

Motivation: When high-performance Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) operate, efficient thermal management is essential. As part of the EU project MGICIAN, she focuses on advancing the integration of thermoelectric cooling technologies with Photonic Integrated Circuits to make photonic technologies more energy-efficient.

Focus: Developing advanced thermal management strategies for high-performance photonic devices.

Lab Motto: III-V Lab: At the Heart of System
